Ernest SLINGENEYER (Lochristi, 1820 - Bruxelles, 1894)
André Pierre Joseph, Marquis de Maison On his original canvas. Signed and dated on the stretcher "Ernest Slingeneyer pinxit 1870". 66 x 55 cm Our model (1797 - 1869) is the son of Marie Madeleine Françoise Weygold (1776 - 1851) and Nicolas Joseph Maison (1771 - 1840). The latter enlisted in 1792 and served in the Army of the North and conquered all his ranks on the battlefields. Appointed general after Austerlitz, he fought at Jena, Spain and Holland and became a divisional officer in 1812. In 1814, at the head of the Armée du Nord, he defended Belgium against the Allies. He joined the government of Louis XVIII and followed the king to Ghent during the Hundred Days. In 1814, he received the government of Paris and the peerage and in 1817, the title of marquis. In 1828, the expedition of Morée, which he commanded in chief, earned him the marshal's baton. The July Monarchy appointed him Minister of Foreign Affairs (November 1830), ambassador to Vienna (1831), St Petersburg (1833), and finally Minister of War (1835-1836).
