The inlaid decoration of the tray, combining floral motifs of rosettes and foliage, with geometrical checkerboard motifs and latticework of latticework, is inspired by Byzantine art of the 15th and 16th centuries.
A ceremonial table, now kept in the Porto-Colleoni castle near Venice, has a similar base with a pattern of winged women halfway up their bodies, set in lion's hocks with claws at the end.
