183. ANTONIO DAVILA (1934-1993) - Lot 183
183. ANTONIO DAVILA (1934-1993) Totem Sculpture in white marble. H : 111 cm Antonio DAVILA (1934 - 1993) Born in 1934 in Vigo in Galicia, Antonio Davila, sculptor of international fame, is the author of works with simple volumes and strong rhythms, carriers of symbols. Antonio Davila comes from a line of craftsmen-artists in a country that, as he said himself, "is a forest of granite, where everyone cuts stone. At the age of eleven, he received a scholarship that allowed him to study at the School of Arts in Vigo. Other scholarships, obtained throughout his studies, led to other institutions, in Santander and Madrid, where he obtained his first distinction: a medal at the national exhibition in 1951. He then went to study abroad, in particular in Rome and Milan, where he was a student of Marino Marini. He then moved to Mexico, where he remained for most of the 1990s. Possessing a true traveler's soul, he staked out his world tour with works. Finally, he returned to Europe and settled in Paris where a studio was made available to him by the State. At the end of the 1980s, he spent several years in Reunion Island. Antonio Davila likes the materials he uses for his sculptures. Some are very expensive. All of them he chooses carefully, according to the work he intends to do. Among the stones are sandstone, granite; another, with a blue grain, comes from Lozere, a third, very hard, from Sweden. The marble, as for him, is most often Italian. He also uses metal (iron, bronze) or wood, especially tropical species.
