"In her portraits, Marie Laurencin avoids any external influence, any allusion to a public or private event to the material objects of the everyday life which fascinate its cubist fellow-members. The only accessories that she uses during half a century are always the same half-century are always the same ones: the musical instruments (mandolin and guitar), the fan instruments (mandolin and guitar), the fan, the mirror with hand, ribbons, flowers: only is suggested a is suggested, the one that inspires him the beings and more particularly the young girls, the young girls, animals, nature. The title inscribed by the artist on the back of the frame, "Music", gives the painting an allegorical value. It recalls the importance of music in the life of Marie and her her collaboration to a famous ballet: the sets and costumes of "Les Biches" for the Russian ballets of Diaghilev (1924). But she also worked on other ballets: those of Henri Sauguet, "L'éventail de Jeanne"; Le déjeuner sur l'herbe music by Joseph Lanner, by the Compagnie des Champs-Élysées as well as for the ballet "Dominique et Dominique" (argument by Jean Davray).
