Paper repair at the top of the preface pages. First edition, illustrated with 5 copper-engraved figures in the text, of the only printed part of a major history of Alsace planned by the author. The work was to comprise three volumes, but only only this extensive introduction was published. Handwritten bookplate Johann Ludwig Eckardt - 1770. Attached: a L.A.S. from the author, dated January 16, 1691, written in French, 3 pp. in-4. It revolves around the first Council of Arles and the exact nature of the persecutions suffered by Christians under the High Empire.
