On April 20, 1816, Viscount de Dampmartin was appointed by Louis XVIII as librarian of the
Dépôt de la Guerre.
The two unpublished volumes we present contain the fruit of 18 months' labor: when
Clarke resigned from the Ministry of War in September 1817, Dampmartin lost his position
