72. Emmanuel Alfred BEURDELEY (called Alfred... - Lot 72 - Farrando
72. Emmanuel Alfred BEURDELEY (called Alfred II) Pair of barometer and thermometer cartels forming a pendant in chased and gilded bronze with two shades of gold, decorated with medallions in blue and white Wedgwood cookie porcelain illustrating a mother and her children. The white enamelled dials with Roman and Arabic numerals signed A. Beurdeley fils in Paris. The mercury tubes are flanked by columns and topped with Zephyrs' heads and garlands of flowers. The dials are underlined by horns of plenty and have a base finished by a pine cone. Large ribbon knot at the amortization. Signed BY on the reverse. Louis XVI style, late 19th century. (Cracks in the enamel of one of the thermometers). H : 115 cm - L : 25,5 cm. The labels we present are those reproduced in L'Ameublement d'art français 1850-1900, Camille Mestdagh, Les éditions de l'Amateur, Paris, 2010, page 221 (fig. 258). Our cartels with clock and barometer in counterpart reproduce a well known and documented model attributed to Pierre- Joseph-Désiré Gouthière, formerly kept at the Château de Saint-Cloud, then transferred by order of the Empress Eugenie in 1870, and now exhibited in the Louvre Museum (inv. OA5493-94). At the first exhibition of the Union centrale des Beaux-Arts appliqués à l'Industrie, in 1880, dedicated to "metal", copies of the barometer-thermometer attributed to Gouthière appeared on the Beurdeley stand. Then, the famous black and white photograph illustrating the Beurdeley stand at the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 1893 featured the barometer and the cartel of sconces in the center background, on either side of the King's desk. At the Beurdeley sale in May 1895, there was a barometer-thermometer of the same model but in pear wood, which is specified: Reproduction of the Louis XVI barometer in gilded bronze which is in the Louvre museum. A similar pair, kept in the Beurdeley Collection, was sold on May 16, 1979 (Palais d'Orsay, Ribault-Menetiere-Lenormand et Oger, lot 47). Only the subjects of the Wedgwood cookie plates differ on the cartel. Among the cartels sold at auction are: - Christie's London, May 25, 2000, lot 126. - Christie's London, October 1, 2002, lot 63. - Sotheby's New York, April 19, 2007, lot 28 (only the thermometer cartel was presented for sale, the enamel dial signed "Sormani", the signed "Sormani", the bronzes marked with the monogram BY for Beurdeley). - Sotheby's London, April 28, 2015, lot 68. - Christie's London, September 30, 2015, lot 49.
