79. Emmanuel Alfred BEURDELEY (called Alfred... - Lot 79 - Farrando
79. Emmanuel Alfred BEURDELEY (called Alfred II) Rectangular table called "of the Muses" with inlaid decoration of an allegory of Astronomy and Geometry, personified by the Muses Urania and Calliope, seated on either side of a celestial globe placed on an entablature. The corners of the tray are decorated with rosettes flanked by acanthus leaves. Ornamentation in chased and gilded bronze such as acanthus leaves in scroll, lingotières, rush on the feet and sabots. It opens in the waist with a central drawer simulating two drawers and a secret drawer operated by a concealed pusher. After a model of Jean-Henri Riesener. Stamped A. BEURDELEY IN PARIS. Louis XVI style, late 19th century. (Some scratches and slight dents on the top, small oxidation on the bronzes). H : 75,5 cm - W : 109 cm - D : 61 cm. Provenance : Acquired by Mr Justin LECOULES in 1939. The table we present is the one reproduced in L'Ameublement d'art français 1850-1900, Camille Mestdagh, Les éditions de l'Amateur, Paris, 2010, page 82 (fig. 78 and 79). It was during the exhibition of the Union centrale des Beaux-Arts appliqués à l'Industrie which took place in Paris in 1880 that Beurdeley fils exhibited about fifteen reproductions of famous works of the eighteenth century and in particular the table known as "des Muses". This table is an exact replica of the one made by Riesener and delivered in 1771 for Mr. de Fontanieu, Intendant Controller General of the Crown Furniture from 1767 to 1783. On this table, only the arrangement of the drawer differs with an adjustable shelf forming a writing table (now kept at the Hôtel de la Marine, apartments of the intendant of the Garde-meuble, on loan from the Musée du Louvre, D-T 510 C). Among the examples made by Alfred Beurdeley, we can mention - A table sold at the A. Beurdeley, 6 to 9 May 1895, Etude Chevallier, Galerie Georges Petit, lot 281. - A table sold at Christie's London, 24 February 2000, lot 213. - A table sold at Christie's London, October 1, 2002, lot 69.
