81. Emmanuel Alfred BEURDELEY (called Alfred... - Lot 81 - Farrando
81. Emmanuel Alfred BEURDELEY (called Alfred II) Chased and gilt bronze cartel, representing Harlequin and Colombine, among a luxuriant and exotic vegetation, topped by Pierrot playing the mandolin. The white enamelled dial with Arabic and Roman numerals signed A. BEURDELEY Fils in Paris. Movement signed J. LEFEBVRE Fils in Paris. Louis XV style, late 19th century. H : 59 cm - W : 26 cm - D : 15 cm. The cartel we present is the one reproduced in L'Ameublement d'art français 1850-1900, Camille Mestdagh, Les éditions de l'Amateur, Paris, 2010, page 242 (fig. 284). A similar cartel was sold in the A. Beurdeley, May 6-9, 1895, Etude Chevallier, Galerie Georges Petit, lot 30. This cartel is an exact replica of a Louis XV period model, of which a copy, hallmarked with a crowned "C" with a dial signed Jean-Baptiste Baillon, was presented in Paris (Sotheby's, December 16, 2004, lot 138). The main scene illustrating an episode of the Commedia dell'arte is inspired by a famous painting by Nicolas Lancret painted in 1734, kept in London at the Wallace Collection.
