From a painter's family in Neuchâtel, Théophile Robert is an apostle of the revival of the classical tradition in the 1920s and 1940s. He was trained in Berlin and Paris where he studied under Gérôme and Jacques-Emile Blanche at the Beaux-Arts.
Returning to Switzerland in 1912, he became interested in sacred art and decorated several churches, religious themes remaining important throughout his career. In 1918, he worked in Le
Corbusier's studio and became friends with André Lhote, Gino Severini and
Roger Bissière. The artist's career really took off in 1921 at the Salon des Indépendants where his works met with great success. The artist excels in the painting of nudes with heavy and voluptuous bodies and generous forms very often located in a dreamlike setting ... They reveal a style marked by Art Deco influences but also by classicism. The Neuchâtel Museum dedicated a permanent room to this artist and organised a major retrospective exhibition in 1979.
